Frequently Asked Questions

A pool safety inspection is a detailed process that evaluates the safety of your backyard pool. A qualified inspector will visit your home and check for a number of criteria, including making sure:

✓ your pool fence is at least 1.2m high in all areas
✓ the gap below your pool fence is no greater than 100mm
✓ your pool gate’s safety latches are correct and compliant
✓ your pool fence has no climbable objects nearby
✓ the pool area has adequate pool safety signage, if applicable in your state

When it comes to gate latches, they must be working, open outwards and be self-closing and self-locking, all in accordance with New Zealand Standards.

If you don’t meet one (or several) of these criteria, you risk failing your pool safety inspection. Don’t stress, though – getting a pool inspection is a great opportunity to talk to an expert and find out exactly what you need to do to meet legal standards for pool fencing.

In fact, you can get in touch with a pool safety inspector like Jim’s Fencing for advice and guidance on pool safety even if you aren’t booking a pool safety inspection right away.

On the other hand, if you already know your pool fencing isn’t up to scratch, get in touch with one of our capable team to resolve any potential safety hazards around your swimming pool.

Some of these pool safety requirements you can even meet without needing to talk to a fencing contractor. For instance, your pool fence must have a non-climbable zone of 90cm around the entire length of the fence line. Objects like chairs, potted plants, short trees and shrubs, and even pool toys should all be moved a safe distance from the pool fence.

If you pass the pool safety inspection, then a pool safety certificate will be issued. If not, you’ll have the chance to correct any problems, such as replacing a hazardous pool gate latch with a safe and secure replacement.

To find out more about New Zealand requirements for pool fencing, see the Auckland Council online resources.

New Zealand has rules about when you need to have your pool inspected and how often it needs to be rechecked.

  • Pool owners must have their pool inspected at least once every three years.
  • This should be within 6 months either side of the anniversary of the pool’s completion.

This doesn’t just apply to in-ground swimming pools, either. Proper fencing is required for all of these categories when over 400mm deep:

in-ground and above-ground pools
indoor pools
wading pools
portable pools

However, these are only the legal minimum requirements for pool safety inspection. You may choose to have a pool fence inspection at any time, for your own peace of mind or to provide evidence your pool has the highest possible standard of safety.

Whether you need to complete a pool safety inspection for your property, or you just want some advice on how to make your backyard pool safer, the experienced team here at Jim’s Fencing can help you out with all your pool fence related needs.

There are plenty of reasons you may need a pool safety inspection. Maybe it’s been a couple of years and your pool safety certificate has lapsed. Perhaps you are looking to sell or lease your property and need to make sure everything is certified, safe and up to date. Or maybe you have just renovated and want to be sure that your remodel hasn’t affected the safety of your pool fence.

Regardless of the reason you need a pool safety certificate right now, it all comes down to one key motivation: keeping your kids, friends and family safe around the water. All pool fencing regulations in New Zealand are the minimum standards required to make sure no child is ever at risk.
